"Shade to Order" Self Tanning Lotion

During spring and summer months, we like to show a little skin. However, pasty dull legs, chest and arms may put you off when considering more revealing styles. Of course, we know that "real" sun tans are not safe, due to the prevalence of skin cancers that can result from exposure to UVA and UVB rays. Nor are tanning beds a viable alternative. They can be just as damaging, if not more so than a day in the sun. So what can you do to add a little color?

There are many lotions, gels, sprays and similar products on the market that are formulated to give your skin the color and glow of a suntan. Fortunately, they no longer turn your skin orange, as Coppertone's QT lotion did in the 1970s and 80s. The trick to getting a natural looking tan with the self-tanning products is knowing how to use them properly, and finding one that matches your skin tone.

Bath and Body Works has a new lotion that may just work for everyone! As part of its True Blue Spa/Bronze Bombshell line, "Shade to Order" allows the consumer to pick one of 7 shades of self-tanning lotion. These range from no color (plain moisterizer) to rich color. I tried this product last week and in just 2 days, had a noticeable natural looking tan on my legs, arms and chest. You can also use it on your face. The smell is mild and not offensive (many self-tanners have a certain smell).

General tips to keep in mind before using a self-tanner are as follows. Always exfoiliate your skin beforehand with a scrub to remove dead surface cells. Pay special attention to elbows and knees. Dry off completely. Start with a quarter-sized amount of lotion and rub it in completely, go over the area several times and be sure to blend as carefully as possible, especially around your ankles and the tops of your feet. When working on your arms, be careful to blend all the way around to avoid streaks on the backside. Wash your hands with soap and warm water very well afterwards, paying attention between your fingers and the base of your wrists.

Depending on the depth of color you select, you may notice a difference within 6-12 hours. To deepen your color, continue applying each day. Once you reach the shade you like, re-apply at least once every 3 days, as the "tan" will fade over time.

Enjoy your sun-kissed look!
