Flavored Coffee Creamers
Numerous flavors of coffee creamers crowd the aisles at grocery stores these days. You can find dry, powdered confections in one area, and liquid formulations in the refrigerated sections. Seasonal favorites spring up during the holidays (egg nog, gingerbread, etc.) All these alternatives make me wonder if we are drowning out the true flavors of the roasted coffee beans themselves? Why buy expensive coffee if you are not going to enjoy the nuances of the nutty, earthy flavors that can truly only be experienced by enjoying the drink black? There are indeed roasts that deserve, in fact need, to have cream added. Folger's has improved slightly over the years, but you're still going to want to add to your mug to help its palatability. Same thing with whatever they serve at Denny's Restaurants. But many people that make their own coffee at home purchase quality beans these days, particularly after Starbucks began its meteoric rise in the 1990s. If you still want to add a bit of flavor to your breakfast drink, then try holding back. Don't over-pour. A little bit goes a long way. Even the low-fat versions are loaded with extra calories. By your third or fourth cup, you could be ingesting 100-150 unnecessary calories that will add up each week. Try tasting the coffee itself, without masking its true flavors. If its too bitter, try switching brands or brewing methods. You may be surprised at how much you enjoy sipping a nice cup of black coffee. |
